When the Hanford Nuclear Reservation was producing plutonium, radioactive substances, such as iodine-131 and plutonium, were released into the air and transported with the wind.  Normal wind patterns blew southeast to the Tri-Cities, toward Walla Walla, then turning northeast toward Spokane and Northern Idaho. Known as "hot spots" of Hanford, these towns and regions experienced higher levels of exposure to harmful emissions from Hanford and in turn increased risk to health issues associated with such exposure.
