Important agent of human zygomycosis (1,2,1284), mucormycosis (1,2), rhinocerebral (1,2,568,1293,1294), ocular (161,1295,1296), pulmonary(1,2,1296-1301,1309), genitourinary(1,1302), (sub)cutaneous(1,2,1303-1307), bone (1308), soft tissue (2), gastrointestinal(1,1309), disseminated (1,1309-1312) infections, frequently fatal, mostly in immunocompromised patients.

IDENTIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS on POTATO DEXTROSE AGAR (PDA)

White or gray surface, white reverse. Rhizoids present at junctions of stolons and sporangiophores. (2) vs: Mucor, Rhizomucor.
