From 1942 through 1953, the Electra Metallurgical Company performed work with radioactive materials under contract with the Manhattan project and the Atomic Energy Commission. Electra Metallurgical was hired to design, engineer, construct, and operate a plant to produce uranium metal from uranium tetrafluoride (UF4), also known as green salt. The UF4 was shipped from Union Carbide's Linde Air Products Division plant at Tonawanda, New York. Once at Electra Metallurgical the UF4 was reacted with magnesium in induction furnaces and converted to uranium metal. This was recast into 110- to 135-kilogram ingots which was shipped to Hanford and other sites.
