The Bush administration is trying to back away from an agreement worked out between the state and federal governments to clean up nuclear waste at Hanford. During a hearing on a bill to set up a fund to pay for the cleanup, Washington officials accused the Bush administration of pushing a separate bill because they fear legislation establishing national cleanup priorities would direct all the money to Hanford. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been asked to settle differences between the state and federal governments over the cost of cleanup.
