The almost $2 billion that Hanford received from the federal government as part of the stimulus program is beginning to run out. Two Hanford contractors, Mission Support Alliance and CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co., have begun or will soon begin laying off employees. Expected layoffs will total over 1,500 employees. The DOE and its contractors are setting up programs to help those laid off find new employment locally and nation-wide.

The impact that these layoffs will have on the cleanup progress in coming years is not discussed.
