July 16

After two weeks of rain and poor weather conditions, the first atomic bomb test in the world took place at the [Alamogordo Area] on a plot of land code-named the Trinity Site. The bomb was dropped early in the morning with General Groves, [Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer] and the other Los Alamos physicists including Enrico Fermi in attendance. The men later related that they were extremely worried about the consequence of the atomic reaction, not knowing how it would affect the outer atmosphere, not to mention the surrounding towns. Scientists were stationed at nearby towns to test the atmospheric effect after the bomb was deployed.
