After dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ending the second World War, Hanford went through a lull in work for a few years before the Cold War began and nuclear production rose in interest yet again. During that time, staff at Hanford fell dramatically because there was no longer work to be done or research to be carried out. Moreover, the reactor machinery was easily maintained by only a few number of people and funding was not as readily available since the demand for plutonium was no longer as great as it had been.
