Overview

The Prestige oil spill was largest environmental disaster in Spain's history. The Prestige was an oil tanker that ruptured a tank November 13, 2002 off the Galician coast and then broke a part November 19, 2001. The spill polluted thousands of kilometers of coastline and more than one thousand beaches on the Spanish and French coast, as well as causing great damage to the local fishing industry. The spill released over 77,000 tones of oil, or 20 million gallons of oil. Clean up costs were estimated at over $12 billion.
