- 1815 - Crawford Long was born, an American physician and pharmacist best known for his early use of diethyl ether as an anesthetic.
- On this day in 1952, the United States exploded the first hydrogen bomb in a test at Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands.
- On this day in 2006, Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy, was poisoned with polonium 210 (also called radium-F). Polonium 210 is a rare and highly radioactive element found in uranium ores. Litvinenko died on November 23, 2006 as a result of the exposure. His wife Marina was also exposed, and Litvinenko dictated a letter to her on this deathbed. In the letter he accused the Russian President Vladimir Putin of authorizing his assassination; Putin vehemently denied the allegation. The day following Litvenenko's death, Yegor Gaidar, a former Russian Premier, was poisoned in Ireland.
- Side Note: Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned with Dioxin in August of 2004.
