Overview

Leon Golberg (August 22, 1915 - May 3, 1987) was born in Limassol, Cyprus, the son of a jeweler. Globerg synthesized Diethylstilbestrol (DES) in early 1938 as a graduate student of Sir Robert Robinson at the Dyson Perrins Laboratory at the University of Oxford. DES was medically as a synthetic estrogen and as a growth stimulant for domestic animals before its toxicity was full realized. Globerg was a very well regarded toxicologist and worked through out his career to understand the mechanisms of toxicity of chemicals and relationship to disease.
