Herbert Desel grew up in Immenhausen, Hessen, (in the middle of) Germany.

Education 

He graduated in Chemistry in 1982 and received a PhD degree 1985 with scientific work dealing with molecular processes of signal transduction in vision studied with spectroscopic methods.

In 1992, he received the degree of a physician and started his work in the Toxicology Department at the Göttingen University Hospital.
