Football head injury

Football is toxic to the head

A warning in The Journal of the American Medical Association: "There is a very definite brain injury due to single or repeated blows on the head or jaw which cause multiple concussion hemorrhages. ... The condition can no longer be ignored by the medical profession or the public." Journal of the American Medical Association on October 13, 1928

December 2009 that the N.F.L. finally conceded publicly that concussions "can lead to long-term problems."

Traumatic brain injury (TBI, also called intracranial injury) occurs when an outside force traumatically injures the brain. TBI can be classified based on severity, mechanism (closed or penetrating head injury), or other features (e.g. occurring in a specific location or over a widespread area). Head injury usually refers to TBI, but is a broader category because it can involve damage to structures other than the brain, such as the scalp and skull.
