Overview

This page is intended to give the users the necessary skills (or links to the necessary skills) to be able to edit an existing page to make it more usable, accurate, detailed, or all of the above. If you have any questions as you proceed, feel free to email Sean at sfoley@toxipedia.org.

Groups and Permissions Overview

Toxipedia is a modified wiki-website and the site has different sections that require different oversight. Some areas, including all the comments and the discussion forum as well, are completely open-source and editable by anyone. Other pages, especially those that are highly researched, are then protected and accessible only by the Managing Group. This is done to ensure the accuracy of the information that people base important decisions off of.

How Do I Know Which Pages are Accessible?
The general rule of thumb, is that the more heavily researched the page is, the higher that it is rated, then the more likely that it will be protected. But, the easiest way to tell is to sign in, go to the page, and attempt to edit the page. If it is not available, then you will need to contact the system administrator, Sean Foley, in order to be placed into the Managing Group and have access to the page.

Groups
"Groups" are just that: groups of different qualified individuals with access to the pages in which they are well-informed. The goal of Toxipedia is to have numerous different groups - The Metals Group, The Pesticides Group, The Tox Historian Group, etc. - each charged with editing the pages within that group's category. The individual members within each group will have individual pages so viewers can see each expert's qualifications and any information they would like to share. The Toxipedia Administration will determine who is in the groups and if a confluence user wishes to edit a page that has been "locked down" (ie - only accessable by the assigned group), they can contact the administration to join the group. It is important to note that not all pages will be "locked down" and a large portion of the site will be less restricted. Also, Toxipedia Administration has the ability to disallow edits that are not backed by fact.

Editing and Wiki-Markup

This is a step by step guide to editing an existing, unprotected page.

1) First you must register for the site and be signed in.

2) After you are signed into Toxipedia, and the page is not protected and managed by a group, a box will appear in the upper left hand area of the page that looks like this:

Edit this page...

  • Edit
  • Attachments (0)
  • Info
  • Browse Space
  • Add Page

3) Click on the Edit link which will bring you to the editable version of the page. This is what the back-end text of the viewable page looks like. Then you are free to go into the page and change incorrect information or add information of your own. This will then be vetted by Staff and some or all changes may be accepted or rejected.

4) If you are signed in, and the above box does not appear, then you do not have access to editing that page. To gain access, email questions@toxipedia.org and ask for access to the page. This process is done to better guarantee the information that we provide is accurate and well-researched.

5) After you gain access you are ready to edit the page.

Editing Specifics

Main Article: Toxipedia Editing Guide
In order to edit a page, a user must use the Wiki-Markup format. It is very simple to use and, since you are editing an existing page, the wiki-format is already in front of you!

Modes

The different "modes" are viewable once the user is register , signed in, and has already entered into the edit mode.

View Mode
View mode is the default mode that allows everyone to view Toxipedia. All people can view the site.

Edit Mode
Edit mode is the mode that you must be in to be able to edit a page. To use the edit function you must register and then login. Once you have logged in, go to the page you wish to edit and click on edit to the right of view. You can then use rich text or wiki markup to edit the page. Practice editing on the Practice editing page.

Not all pages are subject for editing. Those pages that have been reviewed by Toxipedia staff and then outside editors will be protected. This assures readers that those pages are secure and all information is correct and not being changed without warrant.
