Overview


Ammonia or azane is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. It is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell. important part of fertilizers, worldwide production is estimated at 146.5 million tonnes.

The Romans called the ammonium chloride deposits and was important to the Muslim alchemists as early as the 8th century. Gaseous ammonia was first isolated by Joseph Priestley in 1774 and was termed by him "alkaline air". Eleven years later in 1785, Claude Louis Berthollet ascertained its composition.
