Perennial

Plants that fall into the category of perennials live for two or more years, continually building its root system and regrowing or reblooming each year as opposed to having to regrow from seed like annuals and biennials. Perennials cover a broad array of plants ranging from thousand year old trees like Sequoias, to shrubs such as rhododendrons, to small ferns. This category of plant growth has many subgroups that further define perennials based on their nature of year to year growth.

Herbaceous Perennials

These perennials will grow and bloom during the spring and summer and then die back and loose their foliage during the fall and winter. Come the next spring the process will occur again, as the plant regrows from its roots.

Woody Perennials

Woody Perennials, such as trees and roots, will not die back each year. Instead they will enter a stage of slowed growth, still maintaining their branches and stems. Depending on the plant, woody perennials may or may not loose their foliage during the cooler months of fall and winter.

  • Deciduous Woody Perennials

Perennials that loose their foliage during the fall and winter, regrowing it again in the spring. In climates that stay warm year round, many plants in this category will not loose their leaves and will bloom several times a year.

  • Evergreen Woody Perennials

Perennials that hold on to their foliage year round. Much of this category is made up of evergreen trees but also includes shrubs such as azaleas and rhododendron.
