Mulch

Applying mulch is the final step in the creation of your rain garden and is vital to its success. Mulch helps keep the soil moist, help prevents erosion, and discourages weeds from sprouting.
• Large, coarsely shredded wood chips work well, as they do not float easily when runoff ponds in the rain garden.
• A 3-inch deep layer is recommended on the bottom and sides of the rain garden and berm.
• A cubic yard of mulch covers just over 100 sq. ft. with 3 inches.
Maintenance Tips
• Water as needed in the first 1-2 summers, to encourage plants to establish deep, strong roots.
• Apply mulch as needed every 1-3 years to prevent erosion and weeds.
• Monitor inlet and outlet as needed during each year to keep them free of debris.
• Do not fertilize or use pesticides.
