Ferns

Ferns, like grasses provide a wonderful display of vertical arching lines that provide contrast and elegance in the landscape plan. Ferns are available in a variety of sizes and shades of green. While a number of varieties are deciduous, our native sword fern is one of many that are evergreen. Unlike grasses, ferns prefer a shaded location. Avoid hot afternoon sun exposure to prevent scorching; morning and dappled sun are agreeable to ferns. Ferns do best in moist, well-drained soil with an organic mulch such as leaves or wood chips.
